Ogden, UT – The Ogden Police Department has reported a concerning rise in auto-pedestrian crashes over the past year, leading to an increased focus on pedestrian safety. In an effort to address the issue, the department recently launched the “Crosswalk Safety Project,” which aims to educate both drivers and pedestrians on the importance of following traffic laws and staying alert on the road.
During a community event last week, Lt. Glen Buss of the Ogden Police Department’s Community Engagement Bureau highlighted the role of pedestrians in wearing bright clothing to remain visible to drivers. “We’re not trying to hide in any way,” Buss explained, noting that pedestrians are encouraged to be seen clearly by motorists.
Despite these efforts, a number of drivers have been pulled over for violating crosswalk laws, particularly in areas with a history of auto-pedestrian accidents. Buss urged drivers to think about roadway safety each time they get behind the wheel. “We want drivers each morning when they get in the vehicle to be thinking about the importance of roadway safety,” he said.
The initiative underscores the responsibility both drivers and pedestrians share in preventing accidents. Officers have stopped several drivers in locations known for frequent pedestrian incidents. Many of these drivers have reported difficulties seeing pedestrians crossing the road, particularly during early morning or low-visibility conditions. However, Buss emphasized that pedestrian safety is not just a seasonal issue, pointing out that people walk year-round.
Under current laws, drivers are required to stop for pedestrians on their side of the road. This rule becomes even stricter in school zones, where drivers must remain stopped until the pedestrian has fully crossed the road. Buss highlighted the importance of safeguarding children in particular, stressing that they are the primary focus of the law. “Ultimately, the children are the main priority, and we want to make sure that they are safe,” he said.
As the Ogden Police Department continues its efforts to promote road safety, both drivers and pedestrians are being reminded of their shared responsibility in making the streets safer for everyone.
