When Sarah and Bill found out that they were expecting twins, they became incredibly overjoyed. But their joy was soon mixed with worry when doctors discovered that the children were so-called monochorionic twins, or identical twins that share a placenta and an inner amniotic sac. Such a pregnancy presents big risks, so Sarah was hospitalized for 57 days before giving birth to the twins via a cesarean section. But when the twins were born, everyone in the maternity ward witnessed something unbelievable.
The twins were born within 46 seconds of each other and doctors soon realized that everything had gone well—both girls were healthy. Once the twins were delivered, doctors held the girls up so their mother could see them. And she could hardly believe her eyes when she saw that the girls were holding hands. “My heart just melted,” Sarah told People magazine. “Even my husband got tears in his eyes – I don’t know that anybody in the room had a dry eye.”
It’s been two years since Jenna and Jillian were born. Today, the two busy little girls have started to develop their own personalities. But they still have one thing in common: They love holding hands. Many years later, the girls still love being together and one twin would never think of doing anything without the other. The girls still hold hands often and their closeness is on display in other ways. Several times a week, Bill and Sarah will wake up and find them sleeping in the same bed event though they have separate beds.
“They are just so close and they just want to be around each other,” Sarah said. The sisters, who like gymnastics and playing barbies, are now old enough to find past stories about them online. Bill and Sarah said it’s special realizing their kids made the world smile for a moment in time and they can’t wait to see what the future holds for the twins. “How can they not be destined for something great? I just look forward to continuing to see them grow and see what they can do,” Sarah said.
