NEPHI, Utah — A semi-trailer caught fire on southbound Interstate 15, about seven miles south of Nephi, Sunday afternoon, leading to significant traffic disruptions.
According to Andrew Battenfield of the Utah Highway Patrol, the trailer of the semi-truck became fully engulfed in flames around early afternoon. The Utah Department of Transportation reported the incident and initially anticipated that the scene would be cleared by approximately 4:30 p.m.
Traffic on I-15 came to a standstill as cars were backed up for more than 30 minutes. At around 4:15 p.m., vehicles began to slowly clear, but by 6 p.m., traffic was still halted in the area.
Officials have not released specific details regarding the cause of the fire or the condition of the driver or any others involved. The semi-truck’s cab was reportedly detached from the burning trailer at the scene.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise motorists to expect delays while cleanup and investigation efforts remain underway.
