LOGAN, Utah — A Utah State University (USU) student has been taken into custody following a hazardous chemical incident that led to the evacuation of Mountain View Tower dormitory on Thursday evening.
Joshua Peter Jager, a 20-year-old student, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor counts of causing a catastrophe recklessly and disorderly conduct. The incident unfolded around 8 p.m. when USU police responded to a report of a “ventilation issue” at the Mountain View Tower. The building was quickly evacuated, and a full hazmat response was requested.
According to court documents, Jager had allegedly mixed chemicals in his dorm room, resulting in the production of hydrochloric acid gas. The gaseous substance created a cloud that spread throughout the first floor of the dormitory, forcing the evacuation of residents into frigid subzero temperatures for several hours.
Hazmat crews assessed the situation and confirmed that the gas had contaminated a significant portion of the building. Hydrochloric acid is a toxic substance, classified as colorless to slightly yellow, nonflammable, and corrosive. It is known to cause severe skin burns, serious eye damage, and respiratory irritation if inhaled.
Jager reportedly admitted to investigators that he had set off the fire alarm in an attempt to neutralize the chemicals. He explained that he mixed the substances in his room for that purpose. However, this action resulted in the dangerous release of toxic gas, putting the health and safety of fellow students at risk.
