UTAH – Utah lawmakers will consider two bills that could change bail and sentencings for DUI drivers.
House Bill 20, sponsored by Rep. Steve Eliason, would prohibit sentencing reductions for people charged with driving under the influence. It would require certain sentences to be reinstated if the person fails to complete sobriety program requirements.
The measure would also create a separate offense for each person in a car, who is under the age of 16, when the driver is under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Another bill being considered this legislative session would give Utah judges the authority to deny bail and hold them until trial. House Bill 47 is sponsored by Eliason and Sen. Jerry Stevenson.
Normally, suspected drunk drivers are allowed to be released on bail.
