SALT LAKE CITY, UT — Utah County has emerged as the fastest-growing region in the state, according to new data from the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute. From July 1, 2023, to July 1, 2024, the county added 21,853 new residents, accounting for nearly 43% of the state’s total population growth during the period. This surge in residents is reshaping local communities, especially in places like Saratoga Springs.
Saratoga Springs, a once small community now facing rapid expansion, is taking a proactive approach to managing its growth. As new residents flock to the area, the city has prioritized a three-tiered strategy to ensure sustainable development: master planning, strategic partnerships, and data-driven decision-making.
AnnElise Harrison, spokesperson for Saratoga Springs, explained that the city is collaborating with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to tackle traffic concerns in this commuter-heavy area. “We’re aware that as the city grows, traffic management becomes crucial,” Harrison noted. “Our partnership with UDOT is key to improving roadways and ensuring the community remains accessible.”
Beyond transportation, the city is leveraging local data to assess and plan for the evolving needs of public services. Harrison highlighted how emergency services like the police and fire departments are using growth projections to inform staffing levels. “The police department and fire department have been able to identify specific needs, such as additional officers or inspectors, based on the projected population increase,” she said.
Statewide, the population growth in Utah has been driven by both new residents moving into the state and natural increases from births exceeding deaths. The Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute reported that 52% of the growth in Utah County and surrounding areas is attributed to people relocating from outside the state, while 48% comes from the natural increase.
Interestingly, the report marks a significant shift in the state’s population trends. For the first time in a decade, the natural increase — the difference between births and deaths — has remained unchanged, signaling that external migration is playing a more dominant role in the state’s population boom.
While Utah County continues to experience rapid growth, Tooele County also saw notable increases, making it one of the fastest-growing areas in the state.
As cities like Saratoga Springs adjust to these demographic shifts, careful planning and strategic investment will be essential to managing the growing population. The city’s commitment to using data and fostering partnerships positions it to handle the challenges and opportunities that come with an expanding population.
