Salt Lake City, UT — Christopher Burk, a former captain with the Salt Lake City Fire Department, appeared in court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing regarding allegations of sexual assault involving multiple students during an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) class. Burk, who was dressed in prison garb, listened as victims and witnesses provided testimony about the incidents that allegedly occurred under his supervision.
Two of Burk’s former students testified during the hearing, recounting separate instances of abuse. According to court documents, one victim described how Burk invited her to stay after class for a “review” of first aid assessments. The victim claimed that Burk then took her to another classroom where he allegedly touched her inappropriately under her shirt several times.
Another victim testified that Burk touched her inappropriately during assessments in front of other classmates and even during a ride-along with the Salt Lake City Fire Department. The woman stated that Burk frequently tried to isolate her in private areas of the department, where these assessments were conducted.
The allegations have sent shockwaves through the community and raised questions about the responsibilities of those in positions of authority. Burk, a respected figure within the fire department, now faces severe legal consequences as the case moves forward.
As the preliminary hearing continues, the court will consider whether there is enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial. The Salt Lake City Fire Department has not yet issued a public statement regarding Burk’s employment status, though it is expected that an internal investigation is underway.
