Ogden, UT — A 40-year-old man was arrested over the weekend in connection with a shooting at an Ogden bar on Friday evening that left one person injured.
Carlos Mendez, who was booked into the Weber County Jail on Saturday, is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly firing two rounds into the bar, striking a male patron. According to a probable cause affidavit, the incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Friday at an unnamed bar, where Mendez was reportedly seen on surveillance footage staring at another man seated at the bar.
The affidavit states that Mendez left the bar, only to return shortly afterward, asking staff to turn off the security cameras. He then allegedly stood outside the bar, looking through the front window before a suspect opened a back door and fired two shots into the establishment. The victim, who had been the focus of Mendez’s stare earlier, was reportedly struck by the gunfire.
After the shooting, the suspect fled through the back of the bar and broke through a wooden fence, authorities said. Investigators later recovered two .22-caliber shell casings from the scene.
Mendez was apprehended the following day at a local gas station. Law enforcement officials noted that the clothing he was wearing at the time of his arrest matched that of the shooter seen in the surveillance footage. He was arrested on suspicion of several offenses, including two first-degree felony counts of discharging a firearm, a second-degree felony count related to a restricted-person firearm transaction, and a third-degree felony count of property damage.
Mendez has been ordered held without bail, and his case remains under investigation. The condition of the victim has not been publicly disclosed, and requests for comment from the Ogden City Police Department have not yet been answered.
