OGDEN, UT — A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with an arson that destroyed an under-construction apartment building in Ogden over the weekend. The fire, which was reported at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, quickly engulfed the building, located across from the Ogden Public Safety Building at 2186 Lincoln Avenue.
Ogden Fire Chief Mike Mathieu confirmed that the blaze consumed the structure in a matter of hours, despite the efforts of firefighters who battled the flames and worked to protect surrounding buildings from the spreading fire. Firefighters remained on scene for several hours, fighting to prevent further damage from wind-blown embers that threatened nearby properties.
The building, which was still under construction, is considered a total loss, and several surrounding structures sustained significant damage. Initially, fire officials stated there was no indication of foul play, suggesting the fire may have started inside the building. However, after further investigation, authorities revealed that the fire was intentionally set.
During a press conference held on Tuesday, Ogden Police Chief Jacob Sube confirmed that evidence collected during the investigation pointed to arson. The 16-year-old boy, a resident of Roy who attends school in Ogden, was arrested for investigation of arson, causing a catastrophe, and felony mischief. His identity has not been released, as he is a minor.
The teenager is expected to face felony charges due to the “significant” damage caused by the fire. Police said that it appears the boy acted alone in the alleged arson. No additional suspects have been identified.
This incident marks a troubling event for Ogden, where the community is grappling with the aftermath of the fire and its widespread destruction. Police and fire officials are continuing their investigation, and the 16-year-old remains in custody as the case develops.
