Sandy, Utah — The Sandy Police Department has ramped up traffic patrols in school zones following a recent incident where a driver was cited for speeding nearly 30 miles per hour over the speed limit. The heightened presence of law enforcement is aimed at ensuring the safety of children as warmer spring weather brings more pedestrians to school grounds.
According to Sgt. Greg Moffitt of the Sandy Police Department, speeding in school zones will not be tolerated. “If you speed through school zones, we’re going to cite you,” Moffitt stated. “It’s our responsibility as drivers to pay attention to the rules of the road—especially when it comes to protecting our kids.”
The citation was issued Tuesday after a traffic patrol unit observed the violation. Moffitt emphasized that there are no excuses for such reckless driving, particularly in areas where children are present.
Local parents have voiced their concerns, noting that they have witnessed firsthand the dangers of speeding drivers near school zones. Some parents have even opted to drive their children to school to avoid having them cross busy roads, a choice they believe is safer given the increasing traffic violations.
With the arrival of spring, more children are walking to school, further raising concerns about their safety in the mornings and afternoons. Sgt. Moffitt highlighted that the school year is drawing to a close, with only eight to nine weeks remaining. “We’ll be out there in those school zones, both morning and afternoon,” he assured.
The Sandy Police Department’s increased patrols aim to send a strong message to drivers: safety around schools must be a priority. With school traffic expected to increase in the coming weeks, officials are determined to protect students from the dangers of speeding vehicles.
