SALT LAKE CITY, UT — A major winter storm is set to impact Salt Lake City and surrounding areas Monday night through Tuesday, prompting the 2News Weather Team to issue a First Alert Weather Day. The storm is expected to bring significant snowfall, making travel difficult and potentially hazardous, especially during the early morning hours on Tuesday.
Officials with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) are advising drivers to delay travel on Tuesday morning until crews are able to clear roadways across Salt Lake County and along the Wasatch Front. The storm is expected to bring between 1 and 4 inches of snow on Interstate 15, stretching from Ogden to Provo. UDOT has recommended that travelers either wait until after 9 a.m. to hit the roads or utilize public transit as an alternative to avoid driving in the challenging conditions.
Meteorologists at KUTV predict that this storm could be the largest winter weather event of the season for Salt Lake City, with widespread impacts on both commuting and road conditions. Heavy snowfall, combined with strong winds, will likely reduce visibility and create slippery roads, increasing the risk of accidents.
As the storm moves through the region, UDOT officials are urging the public to exercise caution and plan ahead. “If you must travel, be prepared, plan ahead, and give yourself extra time to reach your destination safely,” the department said in a statement.
With winter weather continuing to affect the region, drivers are encouraged to stay updated on weather forecasts and road conditions, ensuring that their trips are as safe as possible during this powerful winter storm.
