Salt Lake City, UT — David Broadbent, a 77-year-old gynecologist from Provo, is now facing a total of 17 sexual assault charges after being hit with two additional felony counts on February 26, 2025. According to court documents, these new charges stem from an alleged incident in January 2020, when a patient claims Broadbent assaulted her during a routine examination at his Provo office.
Broadbent has been under intense scrutiny since 2022 when he was named in a civil lawsuit by multiple women accusing him of sexual assault. The women alleged that Broadbent abused his position as a trusted medical professional to carry out inappropriate and medically unnecessary actions during gynecological exams. More than 170 women have since joined the lawsuit, which claims Broadbent engaged in sexual battery over the course of three decades.
In June 2024, Broadbent was criminally charged for the first time. In the months that followed, authorities added additional charges related to similar allegations. The most recent charges, filed earlier this week, accuse Broadbent of felony object rape after a woman claimed he performed a pap smear against her wishes, despite her repeated requests for him to stop. The victim’s account mirrors those of other women who say they were subjected to painful and inappropriate touching during medical procedures.
Broadbent, who is currently free on bail, has pleaded not guilty to the original charges filed in 2024. He has not yet entered a plea for the more recent charges. A pretrial conference is scheduled for March 17, 2025, where Broadbent will appear in court to address the initial charges.
The case has drawn widespread attention, with many questioning how Broadbent was able to continue practicing for so many years without facing scrutiny for his alleged actions. The ongoing legal proceedings are expected to reveal more details, and the impact on the victims remains profound as they continue their fight for justice.
As the investigation unfolds, victims and their advocates are calling for greater accountability within the medical profession to ensure that such abuses of power do not go unchecked in the future.
