Salt Lake, UT – Salt Lake City Police are investigating an alleged kidnapping and assault that occurred last month when a man reportedly forced a security guard into his vehicle and demanded a ride. The incident, which took place on January 7, around 10 p.m., has led to potential charges of aggravated assault and aggravated kidnapping.
According to police reports, 37-year-old Joshua Emmett Barnes approached the security guard, who was stationed at 1594 W. North Temple. Barnes allegedly demanded a ride from the guard, and when the request was refused, he became aggressive. Police say that Barnes forcibly entered the passenger seat of the vehicle and threatened the guard with a shard of glass.
Fearing for his safety, the security guard complied and drove Barnes to a nearby gas station. In an attempt to alert another guard for help, the victim tried to get the attention of a colleague. However, Barnes reportedly insisted that the guard drive him to his own home. The two then continued driving for approximately two hours.
At some point during the ordeal, Barnes reportedly exited the vehicle and walked away. The incident was not immediately reported, but investigators later linked Barnes to the crime after his arrest on unrelated charges on January 25.
The Salt Lake City Police Department has confirmed that they are working with the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office as they assess the case and determine what charges may be brought against Barnes. Authorities have emphasized the seriousness of the charges, which could include aggravated assault and aggravated kidnapping, both of which are felonies in Utah.
The investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected as authorities continue their work on the case.
