Ogden, Utah – Seven schools in the Roy area will not hold classes today due to a significant data and internet outage affecting the region, district officials announced Wednesday morning. The closure comes after an incident late Tuesday night where an on-site contractor accidentally bored through critical communication conduits, causing widespread disruptions in data networks, telecommunications, and internet services.
The schools impacted by the outage include:
- Roy High School
- Sandridge Junior High School
- Roy Junior High School
- Freedom Elementary School
- Roy Elementary School
- Hooper Elementary School
- Municipal Elementary School
According to a district-wide alert sent to parents early Wednesday, the damage occurred at a construction site located at 5600 S. 1900 West in Roy. The contractor’s actions severed fiber optic lines, affecting services from major providers CenturyLink and AT&T. These fiber conduits, which run east to west across 1900 West, are crucial for providing internet and communication services to local schools.
By 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, repairs had yet to be completed, and school district officials warned that even if the damage is fixed within hours, it could take a significant amount of time to restore full service across all affected schools. The outage has left schools unable to operate essential systems, such as online learning platforms, email, and internal communications.
The district emphasized that while repairs are underway, the technical challenges involved in restoring these systems make it unlikely that classes will resume as usual today.
The Roy outage follows a separate incident that caused a closure at Weber School District’s West Haven Elementary on Tuesday. The school was shut down after a fire suppression system was triggered by a small fire caused by a paper towel dispenser in a bathroom. The West Haven Elementary campus has since resumed normal operations after cleanup efforts.
As of now, there is no information regarding the specific construction activities that led to the damage in Roy, nor any updates on how long repairs might take to complete.
For the time being, students and parents in the affected schools will need to make alternative arrangements, as classes will not be held Wednesday. District officials have promised to keep families informed as the situation develops.
