Salt Lake City, UT – Salt Lake City residents now have a powerful new tool to stay informed about crime in their neighborhoods. The Salt Lake City Police Department recently launched an interactive crime map designed to give the public real-time updates on criminal activity across the city. The map, which uses color-coded dots to represent different types of crimes, is part of the department’s ongoing efforts to improve transparency and engage the community in public safety efforts.
The crime map, which can be accessed via a computer or mobile device, tracks a wide range of criminal incidents throughout the city, from burglaries to thefts. Each incident is marked on the map with either an orange or blue dot, allowing residents to quickly identify where crimes have occurred. The launch of the tool comes at a time when crime, particularly auto thefts and burglaries, has been on the rise in certain areas of the city, such as the East Bench.
For local residents like Taylor Sessions, the map provides a valuable way to stay informed about criminal activity in the area. “I use the neighborhood website where people post about things, but to have something official from the police department is great,” Sessions said. “We just had something robbed off our porch, so I think it’s great.”
Sondra Snow, another East Bench resident, also expressed support for the new tool. “It definitely hits close to home because we feel like our area is pretty safe,” Snow said. “But to have something happen that close … definitely will be more aware.”
The launch of the map comes in response to growing concerns from residents about crime and the need for better community engagement. The East Bench, where Sessions and Snow live, has seen a number of recent incidents, including auto thefts and home burglaries. According to the police department, this new tool is designed to empower the public with information, so they can take proactive steps to protect their homes and neighborhoods.
Sergeant Miles Southworth of the Salt Lake City Police Department emphasized the importance of the new tool in promoting transparency and accountability. “It’s important to improve our transparency and accountability, and this tool allows us to keep the public educated on what’s happening. They can see real-time data and know what’s going on around them,” Southworth said.
The hope is that by making crime data more accessible, residents will be better equipped to stay vigilant and report suspicious activity. The crime map aims to foster a more informed and proactive community, ultimately contributing to greater public safety.
As the city continues to roll out the tool, local residents are optimistic that it will help create a stronger sense of security and community awareness. For many, it’s a step in the right direction toward making Salt Lake City safer for everyone.
