Utah Gov. Spencer Cox marks 25 years since 9/11, says ‘never forget’ means telling the story and remembering the unity that followed

Utah – Utah Gov. Spencer Cox reflected on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, urging Americans to remember the nearly 3,000 people who were killed and the unity that followed one of the darkest moments in U.S. history.

“Twenty-five years after September 11, more than 100 million Americans are too young to remember that day,” Cox said in a post on X.

Cox said the phrase “never forget” carries a responsibility to preserve the story of the attacks for younger generations, honor those who lost their lives and remember how Americans responded in the aftermath.

“‘Never forget’ means telling the story, honoring the nearly 3,000 lives we lost and remembering the courage and unity that followed,” Cox wrote.

The governor also reflected on how Americans came together following the attacks, saying people turned toward one another during one of the country’s darkest periods.

“In one of our darkest moments, Americans turned toward one another,” Cox said. “We served our neighbors. We looked out for each other. And we remembered that what binds us together is stronger than what divides us.”

Cox said that spirit of unity remains an important way to honor the people who died on Sept. 11, 2001.

“That is still one of the best ways we can honor those we lost,” he said.

The governor’s message comes as communities across the United States mark 25 years since the terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in New York, at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania.

Cox’s remarks focused not only on remembering the attacks but also on preserving the lessons of the response for Americans who were not alive or old enough to remember the events firsthand.
