TOOELE COUNTY, Utah — A shooting occurred Wednesday morning in Tooele County, leaving a driver seriously injured after an exchange of gunfire with a man who had attempted to help him. Authorities are investigating the incident, which took place near Burmester Road and Interstate 80, just outside of Grantsville.
According to the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office, two individuals were flying drones when a damaged vehicle pulled up near them. The driver appeared injured and disoriented. One of the drone operators called 911 while the other went to assist the driver. During this interaction, the man noticed alcohol inside the car, which led to a verbal confrontation between the two.
The sheriff’s office stated that the driver then exited the vehicle and allegedly drew a gun from his waistband. In response, the man attempting to help pulled out his own weapon, and shots were exchanged. The driver was struck multiple times and was airlifted to a nearby hospital for emergency surgery. He remains unconscious and in serious condition.
The man who had tried to help the driver was unharmed in the exchange. The two individuals flying the drones remained at the scene and are cooperating with law enforcement. At this time, no charges have been filed, and no arrests have been made. Investigators are awaiting a statement from the injured driver to further clarify the circumstances.
The sheriff’s office assured the public that there is no ongoing threat to public safety as they continue to look into the incident.
