LAYTON, Utah — A Layton City crossing guard was killed Tuesday morning after being struck by a vehicle while assisting students near Vae View Elementary School. Authorities have identified the victim as 67-year-old Steven Winn, a long-time member of the school’s crossing guard team.
According to the Layton City Police Department, Winn was wearing a reflective vest and holding a stop sign when he was hit by a northbound driver. The incident occurred in a marked crosswalk near the school, a location that is typically used to ensure safe passage for children.
A police officer who witnessed part of the collision quickly responded to the scene, performing CPR on Winn until medical personnel arrived. Despite the officer’s efforts, Winn was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver involved in the accident remained at the location and is fully cooperating with law enforcement authorities. Police have stated that the traffic light in the area, which is intended to assist with school crossings, was functioning properly at the time of the incident.
“The Layton City Police Department is saddened by this loss. Mr. Winn was a valued member of our crossing guard team, and we mourn his passing along with his family and everyone who knew him,” said a police spokesperson.
The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing. Authorities have not released further details about the driver’s involvement or any possible contributing factors to the incident.
As the investigation continues, local residents and the school community are left grappling with the loss of a dedicated public servant.
