Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle Near Woods Cross High School

Woods Cross, Utah — A pedestrian was hit by a vehicle while crossing the street in a marked crosswalk near Woods Cross High School on Monday afternoon. The 26-year-old man, who was riding a skateboard at the time of the incident, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment.

The collision occurred at the intersection of 500 West and 1850 South, an area that spans four lanes of traffic and has a 40-mph speed limit. Over the years, the intersection has seen several safety upgrades, including the installation of a cement median, flashing lights, and overhead signals. Despite these efforts, residents say the intersection remains a dangerous spot for pedestrians.

Zachary Larson, a local resident who lives just feet from the intersection, shared his concerns. “I’ve seen several close encounters where people will get halfway across the crosswalk and someone will drive right by. It’s kind of just a scary thing,” he said. Larson added that while the flashing lights have made some difference, many drivers still fail to exercise the caution needed to ensure pedestrian safety.

According to the Woods Cross Police Department, the incident involved a juvenile driver, though the specific cause of the crash remains under investigation. Assistant Chief Dan Schultz of the Woods Cross Police noted that distracted driving is a potential factor, but it has yet to be confirmed.

The crash adds to a troubling pattern of pedestrian incidents in Salt Lake and Davis Counties, at least three of which have turned deadly in recent months. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of charges being filed against the driver as the investigation continues.

This incident has reignited calls from residents and safety advocates for increased awareness and further improvements to the area’s pedestrian infrastructure. As investigations proceed, the community remains hopeful that enhanced safety measures and stricter enforcement could prevent future accidents.
