Salt Lake City, UT – The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is investigating an aggravated kidnapping case involving a security guard.
The incident began on January 7, 2025, when 37-year-old Joshua Emmett Barnes allegedly approached a private security guard at 1594 West North Temple and demanded a ride.
After the security guard refused, Barnes is accused of forcing his way into the passenger seat, displaying a shard of glass, and threatening the guard.
The security guard drove Barnes to a nearby gas station, attempting to signal for help, but Barnes allegedly held him against his will and demanded to be taken to the security guard’s home.
The incident is believed to have lasted around two hours before Barnes exited the car and walked away.
SLCPD has consulted with the District Attorney’s Office regarding potential charges of aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault.
Barnes was arrested on unrelated charges on January 25, 2025, and remains in custody.
Charges are allegations, and the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
