Old habits die hard, we all know that. Ladies and gentlemen, that’s also the case for Queen Elizabeth who has had the same sandwich every day since she was just 5 years old. Her former private chef of 15 years made the revelation on his YouTube channel which boasts over 227,000 subscribers.
Darren McGrady, who has been a chef for the late Princess Diana, as well as Princes William and Harry, shared a video on how one could recreate their own royal afternoon tea at home. He went on share the types of sandwiches that Buckingham Palace offered. Having worked at the palace since he was a young boy, chef McGrady opened up about garden parties that would be held there with as many as 6,000 people in attendance.

Revealing the recipe of this simple sandwich, McGrady said it was “just bread and jam with a little butter, usually strawberry jam.” He added, “We’d make the jam at Balmoral Castle with gorgeous Scottish strawberries from the gardens.” In the video, McGrady can be seen spreading jam and butter on bread slices before sandwiching them together and cutting it into circles. “They were called pennies, after the size of the old English penny,” he noted.
The other popular afternoon tea sandwich recipes involved fillings of tomato and cheese and cucumber with mint cream cheese, according to Daily Mail. One viewer has an interesting thought after watching the video.
