MIDVALE, Utah — A 17-year-old high school student tragically lost their life in a car accident on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred just after 12:45 p.m. on Fort Union Boulevard, as two teenagers were traveling westbound in an SUV.
According to the Unified Police Department, the driver, a student from Hillcrest High School, swerved to avoid another vehicle on the road. Due to wet road conditions, the driver lost control of the SUV, causing it to crash into the rear of a parked semi-truck.
The 17-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. A 19-year-old passenger, who was also in the vehicle at the time of the incident, sustained critical injuries and was immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Authorities closed Fort Union Boulevard between 700 East and 900 East as they investigated the scene. The accident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of driving in hazardous weather conditions, particularly for young and inexperienced drivers.
The identities of those involved have not yet been released, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation. The community is left grieving the loss of a young life, while the family and friends of those affected are left to cope with the aftermath of this devastating event.
