St. George, Utah — A tragic incident at a senior living facility in St. George has left a resident dead after an accidental drowning. The incident occurred at Legacy Village of St. George, a facility that prides itself on providing high-quality care for its residents. Authorities reported that the victim, a man who was new to using a wheelchair, accidentally drove his wheelchair into the pool and drowned.
The St. George Police Department received the call regarding the incident around 1 p.m. on Monday. Public Information Officer Tiffany Mitchell confirmed that the man, who was legally blind and had numerous other medical conditions, was unable to avoid driving into the pool. The man’s identity has not been released by officials.
Mitchell stated that, based on initial findings, it appeared to be an accidental drowning. “With any drowning, we bring in our investigation team to see if there is any foul play. That is what we did this time,” Mitchell explained. “He was sent for an autopsy, and it is in open investigation. But it seems like it may have just been a tragic accident.”
According to the facility’s statement, officials expressed their condolences and support for the family. “Resident safety and well-being remain at the core of everything we do,” they said. “The pool involved in this incident is in full compliance with all regulations for pools in independent residential communities.”
The facility also emphasized their cooperation with the local authorities throughout the investigation. In addition, grief support resources have been made available to other residents and staff members affected by the tragedy.
While the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s fall into the pool remains ongoing, Mitchell noted that such incidents were rare at the facility. “This is a really nice facility, it’s new, and lots of residents live here. Unfortunately, accidents do happen,” she said.
The St. George Police Department has yet to provide additional details, and the public continues to await the results of the investigation. Authorities have not indicated whether any changes to facility protocols will be made as a result of this incident.
The community has expressed deep sorrow for the loss, with many noting the difficulty of the situation, given the man’s health challenges and his vulnerability. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting the grieving family and ensuring that other residents and families have the resources they need during this difficult time.
