Ogden, UT – Ogden Police Chief Jake Sube released a statement regarding former Officer Colten Johansen, condemning his conduct as indefensible and a serious violation of law, department policy, and public trust.
Chief Sube said Johansen was immediately placed on administrative leave, referred to an independent criminal investigation, and terminated within days of allegations coming to light in October 2024. He emphasized that the department acted decisively to ensure accountability and fully cooperated with the investigation.
The chief addressed misinformation surrounding the case, clarifying that Johansen will not return to law enforcement and that his certification has been revoked by Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training. He also noted that statements made by former OPD Chief Randy Watt during sentencing regarding evidence storage do not reflect current department policy or practice.
OPD maintains strict evidence handling procedures, including secure storage of all materials, and has never permitted officers to store evidence, including child sexual abuse material (CSAM), in personal residences or unsecured locations.
Chief Sube stressed that the department acted immediately and appropriately from the outset, and that decisions in the judicial process do not change the seriousness of Johansen’s conduct. He reaffirmed the department’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and professional policing, while acknowledging the dedication and integrity of the current Ogden Police officers who serve the community daily.
