Ogden police chief issues warning to teen drivers during National Teen Driver Safety Week, urges parents to keep talking about road safety

Ogden, UT – The Ogden City Police Department is urging teenage drivers and their parents to take road safety seriously during National Teen Driver Safety Week, warning that the excitement of getting a driver’s license must come with an understanding of the responsibilities behind the wheel.

In a Facebook post, the department shared a reminder from Chief Sube, encouraging young drivers to stay alert, avoid distractions and make safe decisions every time they get behind the wheel.

Police acknowledged that passing a driving test and receiving a license is an exciting milestone that gives teenagers a new sense of independence. However, the department stressed that learning to drive safely does not end once the test is over.

Parents were encouraged to continue talking with their teenagers about responsible driving, even if they believe their children have already heard the same advice many times.

The department highlighted several important safety measures for young drivers, including putting away their phones, limiting distractions, watching for other motorists, practicing defensive driving and following traffic laws.

Police also reminded teenagers that their decisions behind the wheel can affect everyone sharing the road, not just themselves and their passengers.

“Some of the most difficult calls our officers respond to involve serious crashes with young drivers,” the department said, explaining that these incidents can have lasting consequences for families, friends, first responders and entire communities.

The department emphasized that it does not want another family to experience the heartbreak associated with a serious crash involving a young driver.

National Teen Driver Safety Week is an opportunity to raise awareness about the risks inexperienced drivers face and encourage families to make safe driving a priority. Distractions, failure to recognize hazards and poor decisions on the road can put young motorists and others in danger.

Ogden police urged teenagers to enjoy the freedom that comes with earning a license while remembering that driving carries significant responsibilities.

The department also called on parents to remain involved in their teenagers’ driving habits by continuing conversations about safety, defensive driving and the consequences of risky behavior.

“Let’s work together to keep our young drivers safe!” the department said.
